Frequently asked questions

How often do we dance?
Most beginner/basic level clubs offer one or two free lessons in September so you can try it out before you make a commitment. Most clubs dance one evening or afternoon a week, from September through April. Summer is reserved for special dances or learning something new again. Clubs often have ‘party’ nights to celebrate various special dates (St Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, etc.), and visiting other clubs is always fun!
What’s the cost?
Most clubs charge “per night”. It works out to about $8 per lesson/dance per dancer. Some clubs have the option of paying for a block of about 12 weeks in advance (often at a reduced rate). A session/dance lasts about 2 hours. What other activity can you enjoy for about $4 per hour?
What do dancers wear?
There are many clothing choices for square, round and line dancing. On club dance nights, most dancers dress casually -- jeans or pants with a shirt or blouse. But should you choose to attend a party night hosted by other clubs or attend larger dances or conventions, the ladies sometimes wear the traditional country and western-style clothes, but it’s NOT a must! Many prefer a nice blouse and ‘prairie-style’ or maxi skirt, or jeans and a shirt. The men usually wear long-sleeved button-up (often western-style) shirts with dress pants or jeans. The most important thing is to bring a pair of comfortable, non-marking shoes so you can dance all night!
I don’t have any previous dance experience. Is square, round and /or line dancing still for me?
Absolutely! Square, round and line dancing are enjoyable social activities regardless of your skill level. We will teach you what you need to know over time. We dance for fun. There are no tests, and you won’t be judged – so there’s no pressure to be perfect or to ‘win’.
I don’t have a partner. Can I still dance?
Absolutely. Most square dance and some round dance clubs are able to pair you up with another dancer. Line dancing does not require a partner. Regardless of what you choose, it is a great way to meet new people!
What if I don’t like country music?
No worries! You can square dance to any music with a good beat. Generally, we dance to a wide variety of musical styles. The music in round dancing matches the dance (salsa, waltz, two-step), and line dancing is definitely country!
Do I need to be physically fit to square dance?
If you can walk briskly, you can square dance. Just throw in a few flourishes, swings and twirls, if you want, and you’ll be having fun in no time! As a form of regular cardiovascular exercise, dance is a great way to improve your overall fitness level while meeting new people and having fun.
Is square dancing intergenerational?
Square dancing is a great intergenerational activity. Some clubs have a minimum age for dancers but generally, everyone is welcome regardless of their age. Dancing is a lifelong activity. Bring the family and start dancing now!
